For most of my life, people knew me before they met me.
Not by my name. By whose light I stood in.
“Oh, so you're…” And then came a sentence that had nothing to do with me. Every time, something burned inside, like stepping into a shower that is far too hot. For one second, I disappeared.
I didn't fight it. For years, I even helped it. I stood beside other people's light and clapped the loudest. When they were happy, I was happy. Their stage felt like my place in the world.
Then the applause moved somewhere else. Others began to clap louder, and slowly I understood that I was no longer interesting. Not to the room. Not to many of the people I had called my friends. They had come for the light. When I stepped out of it, they quietly left. That hurt more than I can write.
And then the question came, the one I had never had time to ask:
Who am I, without the light I stood in?
I didn't know. Some days I still don't. Some days I feel like an alien in my own life. Some days, like a damaged product nobody ordered.
Not long ago, I heard a young man speak at the United Nations. He said that as a child he stopped hearing his own heart, because he had started listening to what others expected of him. And he asked everyone to speak themselves: to say who they really are.
I am forty-five, and I am only now learning to listen.
Here is what I know so far. It isn't much, but it's mine.
I know I love the quiet before the world wakes up. I know my hands like paint that goes where it wants. I know I write, and that writing is the first thing in years that answers to my own name. And I know I can choose myself. I have done it once already.
Maybe someday I'll have the whole answer. Until then, I am writing it down, one true line at a time.
If today you feel like no one sees you, I made a quiet video for you.
Who are you, when no one is introducing you? You don't have to know yet. Neither do I.
With love, from HerWay
