The best part of my day lasts only a little while.
It is still almost dark when we step outside. Tobby goes first, the way he always does, as if he has been waiting all night just for this. The street is empty. The houses are still asleep. Somewhere a bird tries the first note of the day, another answers, and slowly the morning begins to sing.
The air is cool and smells of wet leaves. Sometimes a few raindrops land on my face, and I don't wipe them away. Far off, the first cars start their journey, and then the quiet comes back, softer than before.
We don't hurry. There is nowhere we need to be. Tobby stops at every tree, every corner, every leaf, reading the night's news with his nose. I wait for him. Or maybe he waits for me. I'm never quite sure.
Nobody needs anything from me in these minutes. No one asks how I am. I don't have to be strong or busy or ready. I don't carry yesterday, or the questions, or the heaviness that will find me later. It's as if the morning doesn't know about any of it yet, and for a little while, I'm allowed not to know either.
My hands get cold. My breath turns soft in the air. And something in my chest that has been held tight for so long loosens, just a little.
It isn't happiness. I don't want to call it that. It's something gentler.
A feeling that I am still here, and the world is still here, and we can walk through it slowly, without asking each other for anything.
Then we turn back. The streets begin to wake. The day begins to ask.
But I carry that walk inside me like a small warm stone in my pocket. When the day gets heavy, I hold it. Tomorrow morning, I tell myself. The birds. The cool air. Tobby's quiet steps beside mine.
Maybe that's what keeps me going right now. Not big plans. Not big hopes. Just one gentle morning to look forward to.
Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes that is everything.
Is there a moment in your day, however small, that holds you a little? You can tell me about it. And if you are still looking for it, you can tell me that too.
With love, from HerWay
