Silence Is Still My Shelter

Soft morning light on an armchair with a blanket and a cushion beside a closed white door

There was a time when music hurt.

Not a particular song. All of it. The moment any melody began, something in me tightened, the way you flinch when someone touches a bruise you forgot was there.

I had gone very quiet inside. Not peaceful, just quiet, the kind of quiet you keep around something fragile so it won't break any further. In that silence I didn't have to feel more than I already did. I didn't have to explain anything, not even to myself.

And music always asked for something. To feel along with it. To be moved. To remember. I had nothing left to give it. So I let the silence stay.

The words were the hardest part. Someone singing about love, about pain, about getting through it, and all I could hear was a performance. Lines written to rhyme. Feelings arranged to sound beautiful. My pain didn't rhyme. It didn't build to a chorus. It didn't resolve in three and a half minutes. Next to it, every song sounded like pretending.

I felt guilty about that for a while. Music is supposed to heal, isn't it? Everyone says so. So what was wrong with me, that I turned it off every time?

Nothing was wrong with me.

Some grief needs sound around it. Mine needed a quiet room. And if I'm honest, it still does. Silence is still my best shelter. I choose it over music, over films, sometimes even over people.

There is only one exception. When worry comes and the silence gets too loud, I turn on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. All six films. I have watched them so many times I could close my eyes and still see every scene. And that is exactly why they work.

I don't have to think. I don't have to feel anything I'm not ready for. Nothing will surprise me. I know every road, every battle, every goodbye. And I know how it ends: the good ones win. The darkness doesn't get the last word.

On the days when I can't be sure of anything in my own life, it helps to rest inside a story where I already know.

Maybe that's what shelter is. Not something new that heals you. Something familiar that asks nothing of you, and keeps you safe until the worry passes.

What is your shelter on the hard days? It can be silence. It can be a story you already know by heart. Whatever it is, it counts.
