Dr. Tobby, Dental Hygienist

Tobby, a chocolate Labrador, lying on a wooden floor and chewing a big dental chew

As I've mentioned more than once, Tobby is an exceptionally clean young gentleman.

He watches over his oral health with the same intense focus he gives to a piece of cheese moving across a plate. Which is to say: total, unblinking, and slightly worrying.

His dental career started early.

As a puppy, Tobby discovered that the thin threads of my linen curtains made excellent dental floss. He didn't ask. He simply took a thread, then another, and got to work. Patiently, thoroughly, with the dedication of a true professional. With their help, he successfully removed every single one of his puppy teeth.

I replaced the curtains once.

Then twice.

After the third set, I made a decision that every dog parent will understand: I gave up. The curtains stayed exactly where they were, slightly shredded at the bottom, officially reassigned as Tobby's preventive dental station. Guests sometimes asked about them. I would just say, "It's a long story," and offer them tea.

Then Tobby grew up. And like any serious specialist, he moved on from home remedies to professional care.

These days he uses dental chews, and only of the highest quality. He knows the difference. Offer him something second-rate, and he will look at you the way a dentist looks at someone who says they floss every day.

The cleaning procedure itself is something to see.

He lies down, settles in, and holds the chew firmly between his front paws, like a tiny chocolate surgeon with his instrument. His eyes half close. His whole body goes still, except for his jaw, which works with steady, serious determination. Left side. Right side. A short pause to reposition. Back to work.

He gives himself to this process completely, with every fiber of his being, as if the health of his tooth enamel might one day save the world.

And honestly, watching him, I sometimes think it might.

Because there are grey days when nothing seems to lift the heaviness, and then I look down and see a big brown dog on the floor, holding his chew like a precious treasure, frowning in concentration over his very important work.

And I smile. Every single time.

Somewhere in this house there is still a set of curtains with a slightly ragged hem. I've never replaced them. They remind me that the best things in life sometimes come with a few chewed threads.

A small note for dog owners: threads and fabric can be dangerous if a dog swallows them, so the curtain days are long over, and Tobby's chew time is always supervised. If you are not sure which chews suit your dog, ask your vet.

Every home has its own funny little rituals. What's the most serious one in yours? Tobby is collecting them for his professional journal.
