Let's just agree on one thing from the start: Tobby is the most photogenic chocolate croissant in the world.
Golden-brown. Perfectly curled when he sleeps. Slightly glossy. And, like any good croissant, he becomes absolutely irresistible the moment cheese enters the picture.
Because cheese is not food to Tobby. Cheese is the great love of his life.
The specific variety of cheese does not matter in the least. Whether it's aged parmesan or a humble slice from the fridge, he sits absolutely motionless, holding his breath like a Buddhist monk meditating before reaching ultimate enlightenment. For the sake of that sacred reunion with his true passion, he is ready not only to perform every known command in existence, but to invent three brand-new ones on the spot.
A slow-motion tilt of the head. A tiny, hopeful tap of one paw on my knee. A sigh so deep and dramatic it belongs on a theater stage.
Of course, being a healthy canine gentleman, not all cheeses are allowed on his menu. But restrictions only add to the high drama of the moment. He waits for his tiny share with the fierce, longing devotion of a romantic hero waiting for his long-lost love.
And then there are the eyes.
Big, brown, shining eyes that look up at you with a silent plea for mercy. Not demanding. Never pushy. Just endlessly, heartbreakingly hopeful, as if your answer will decide the rest of his life.
How are you supposed to say no to eyes like that?
Honestly, I usually don't. Those are the most sincere eyes I know, with a big, fluffy heart behind them. A heart that asks for so little: a crumb of cheese, a hand on his head, someone to sit beside.
Some croissants are best with coffee.
Ours is best with cheese. And love. Mostly cheese.
Is there someone in your life who can melt you with just one look? A pet, a person, a pair of eyes you simply can't say no to? Tell me about them. Tobby is always happy to meet another expert in the art of begging.
With love, and a wet nose from Tobby
