The Olympic Champion (Until He Sits Down)

A chocolate Labrador standing proudly in snow and dry grass, looking into the distance

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our living room, where the Games are about to begin.

In the center of the arena stands our champion: Tobby, chocolate Labrador, five years undefeated in the sock relay. Today he has selected a single grey sock from the laundry basket. He holds it high. The crowd (me, on the sofa, with a cup of tea) holds its breath.

And he's off!

First lap: kitchen, hallway, bedroom, back again. Perfect form. Ears flying like little flags. The sock carried as proudly as the Olympic flame. Second lap: even faster. He looks over his shoulder, checking whether anyone has joined the race. Nobody has. He slows down politely, to give the competition a chance.

Still nobody.

He does a third lap anyway. A champion doesn't need rivals. A champion needs witnesses.

And now, after this magnificent performance, our athlete approaches the final event of the day: climbing onto the low sofa for a well-earned rest.

The sofa is not tall. It is, honestly, about knee height. He lifts one front paw. Then the other. Then, with the grace of an Olympic diver, he misses completely, slides sideways, and lands with his back legs still on the floor and his nose in a cushion.

There is a pause.

He looks at me. I look at him. We both understand that I saw everything.

Then he climbs up very slowly, sits down very straight, and stares at the wall with tremendous dignity, as if nothing happened. Nothing at all.

I have a theory about this. Tobby is a champion in perfect shape, but only while he is standing. The moment he sits down, every athletic achievement turns into a mirage and disappears, just as quickly as the socks in our house.

Where do the socks go? Nobody knows. Tobby isn't telling.

But every evening, when the champion finally lies down, slightly out of breath and very pleased with himself, I think the house would be far too tidy and far too quiet without its Olympic ceremonies.

A small note for dog owners: a sock is a fine trophy only while it stays in the mouth. Swallowed fabric can be dangerous, so in our house the relay always ends with a trade for a treat.

Is there a small champion in your home whose talents disappear the moment they sit down? Tell me about them. Tobby would love to know he's not the only one.

With love, and a wet nose from Tobby
