In autumn, the floors are cold before anything else in the house wakes up. For years I padded around in old socks, freezing, telling myself it didn't matter.

It's a small thing. But small things add up when every morning starts in a rush.

1. The First Minute of the Day

Now a pair of soft, warm slippers waits by the bed. I step into them before I'm fully awake, and the first minute of the day is warm instead of sharp. It's the same idea as my sunrise alarm (I wrote about it in Waking Up to Light, Not to Panic): make the beginning gentle, and the rest follows.

On weekdays, they get me as far as the kettle. On weekends, I keep them on all morning, with coffee and nowhere to be.

2. Taking Care of Myself in Small Ways

I used to think caring for myself meant big gestures I never had time for. It turns out most of it is small: warm feet, a hot drink, five quiet minutes. These slippers are part of that list now.

3. Honest Notes

Fluffy slippers are lovely, but a soft sole can be slippery on smooth floors and stairs, so look for a non-slip or rubber sole. Faux fur flattens a little over time. Check whether they are machine washable, because slippers get dirtier than we like to admit.

4. How to Choose

5. Questions People Ask

Can I wear them outside? Only if they have a firm rubber sole. Soft-soled slippers are for indoors.

How do I wash them? Follow the label. Many can go in a gentle cold wash in a laundry bag and then air dry.

Warm feet won't fix a hard day. But they make the first step of it softer.
