My weekdays start early and in a rush. In autumn and winter, that means waking up in total darkness to a sharp alarm, my heart racing before my feet even touch the floor. By the time I reach the kitchen, I already feel behind.
For years I thought that was simply what mornings were. Something to survive.
1. The Body Wakes Before the Sound
A sunrise alarm clock works differently. About half an hour before it is time to get up, it starts to glow, very faintly at first, then warmer and brighter, the way real morning light comes into a room. By the time the sound plays, I am usually already half awake. My body got there on its own.
It is not magic. Light is one of the strongest signals our bodies use to know it is morning. In the dark months, a lamp that imitates the sunrise gives that signal back.
2. Gentler at Both Ends of the Day
Mine also has a sunset mode, a soft light that slowly fades in the evening, which I use the way I use my small bedside lamp (I wrote about that in The Last Light of the Day). And it means my phone doesn't need to be my alarm anymore, which keeps it out of my hand first thing in the morning.
"Since when do you smile at 6 am?" my daughter asked one morning. I don't, always. But I don't jump anymore. And that small difference sets the tone for the whole day.

If you are a very deep sleeper, light alone may not wake you; keep the sound alarm on as a backup. The light is gentle, so in a bright room or with streetlight through the curtains, the effect is weaker. And a few models have bright displays that can be distracting at night, so look for one you can dim or turn off.
4. How to Choose
- A sunrise duration you can adjust (20 to 40 minutes) lets you find what feels natural.
- Choose a display that dims or switches off completely at night.
- Natural sounds are gentler than electronic beeps.
- A sunset mode is worth having if you struggle to wind down in the evening.
5. Questions People Ask
Will it work if I wake up before sunrise anyway? That is exactly when it helps most: in autumn and winter, when it is still completely dark at your wake-up time.
Can I use it as a reading lamp? Most models work as a regular bedside light too, though the light is softer than a reading lamp.
You don't need a perfect morning. A softer start is already a different day.
