Every evening I do the same small thing. Fill the diffuser with water. Add three drops of lavender. Press the button. It takes ten seconds.
But that tiny ritual has become the line between the workday and my evening, the moment I stop running.
1. A Room That Smells Like Rest
A few minutes later, the whole room smells like rest. A soft line of mist, a gentle glow, no flame. It belongs to the same family as my candle warmer (the story is in All the Scent, No Flame): scent without worry.
Some evenings the drops are the only thing I do just for me. It counts.
2. Choosing Scents for the Evening
I keep it simple: lavender when I need to slow down, a little orange when the day was grey, cedarwood in winter. You don't need a collection of twenty bottles. Two or three scents you love are enough.

Some essential oils can be harmful to pets, especially cats and also dogs. Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint and citrus oils are common examples. If you have pets, ask your vet, use only a few drops, keep the room ventilated, and make sure your animal can leave the room. Clean the diffuser regularly, because standing water and oil residue build up quickly.
4. How to Choose
- An automatic shut-off when the water runs out.
- Quiet operation, especially for the bedroom.
- A tank size that matches your room: around 100 to 300 ml is typical.
- Light that can be dimmed or turned off at night.
5. Questions People Ask
How many drops should I use? Usually three to five drops for a standard tank. Start with less; you can always add more.
How often should I clean it? Empty and wipe it after each use, and do a deeper clean with a little vinegar about once a week.
The day doesn't end when the work ends. It ends when you decide it does.
