All the Scent, No Flame

I love candles. Scent is the fastest way I know to tell myself the workday is over, and in autumn a cinnamon candle does it better than anything (I wrote about that in Cinnamon Evenings).

But I never fully relaxed with one lit. A big Labrador with a happy tail. A busy house. And me, too often, falling asleep on the sofa after a long day, with a flame still burning on the table.

1. Scent Without Watching the Flame

A candle warmer lamp solves exactly that. It is a small lamp that shines a warm bulb down onto a jar candle. The heat melts the top layer of wax and releases the scent, just like a burning wick would, but with no flame at all.

So the room fills with scent and soft light, and I can doze off on the sofa without that small voice in my head asking whether I blew the candle out.

2. Candles That Last Longer

There was a surprise too. Because the wick isn't burning, the candle lasts much longer, and there is no black soot on the jar or the ceiling. My favorite candles, the ones I save for special evenings, suddenly last through the whole season.

The dog still knocks everything else off the coffee table with that tail. But not this.

A candle warmer gives a softer glow than a real flame; if you love the flicker itself, it will not replace it. The bulb gets hot, so it should still stand out of reach of children and pets. And it works best with jar candles of the right height, so check the clearance before buying.

• A dimmer lets you control both the light and how fast the wax melts.
• A timer means it switches off by itself, even if you fall asleep.

Is a candle warmer safer than a lit candle? It removes the open flame, which is the biggest risk. It still gets warm, so treat it like any lamp with a hot bulb.

Does the candle smell as strong? Many people find the scent just as strong or stronger, because the whole top surface of the wax melts evenly.

The best evenings are the ones you can actually rest in. Sometimes that means taking the worry out of the room.
