Where My Heart Started Beating Again

A narrow street in the old town of Bari, Italy, with striped awnings and laundry between balconies

There are places on the map, and there are places that change you. For me, one of them is Bari, in the south of Italy, on the edge of the Adriatic Sea.

I arrived there numb. I don't know how else to describe it. For a long time, I had been living without really feeling anything. Food had no taste. Days had no color. I walked through my own life like through a house where all the lights had been switched off.

And then Bari happened.

It started with the sea. I smelled it before I saw it: salt and wind and something old and alive. I stood on the promenade and breathed, and I realized I hadn't really breathed like that in years.

The old town, Bari Vecchia, is tiny: a maze of narrow white streets where you can't get lost for long, because every turn leads back to the water. Laundry hangs between balconies. Bells ring from somewhere you can't see. In the little lanes, women sit at wooden tables outside their doors, shaping orecchiette by hand, the same way their mothers did. I bought a simple panino from a small shop and ate it standing in the street, and I almost cried. I could taste it. I could actually taste it.

And with the taste came everything else.

When you start to feel again, you don't get to choose only the good feelings.

The pain came back too. All of it, everything I had kept frozen for so long.

Every day of those three days, I went to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. I walked down the steps into the crypt, where his tomb lies, lit by small flames. People from all over the world come there to pray, in every language. It was cool down there, and at the same time warm, as if invisible arms were holding me.

Tears were not rare for me in those years. But I had never in my life cried as long and as bitterly as I did in that crypt. Three days of it. Everything I had carried came out there, in front of him, without words.

On the last day, the tears simply ran out. And it became warm. Not the way you feel warm in the sun. The way you feel something that has been asleep for a very long time, slowly waking up. My heart. As if someone had gently placed a hand on my shoulder and said: You are still here. It's not over.

That was the exact spot where my heart started beating again.

I didn't leave Bari healed. That's not how it works. But I left with something I hadn't had in years: hope. A quiet, stubborn hope that one day the sun would rise again, and life would be beautiful, the way it was always meant to be.

Since then, I talk to Saint Nicholas every day on my way to work. I wish him good morning, the way you greet someone dear to you. And I know, with a certainty I can't explain, that without him I would not have made it to the shore.

The sun has risen many times since then. Not every day. But often enough.

Is there a place in the world where your heart started beating again? Or a place you are still waiting to find?
