There are days at work when nothing terrible happens, and still I come home feeling as if I carried something heavy all day. Too many conversations, too many decisions, too many people who needed an answer five minutes ago. My body is home, but my mind is still in the office.
For a long time I tried to fix those evenings with my phone. Scrolling until my eyes hurt, then lying awake anyway. What finally helped was strangely simple: something heavy, on purpose.
1. Why Weight Feels Like Comfort
The first evening I pulled a weighted blanket over myself on the sofa, I noticed my shoulders before anything else. They came down. I hadn't even known they were up. The weight is spread evenly over the whole body, a little like a long, quiet hug that doesn't ask anything back.
Many people describe the same feeling: the body seems to understand that it is safe to stop now. I can't promise it will change your sleep, and it isn't a treatment for anything. But on the heavy days, it gives me ten minutes of stillness I didn't know how to find on my own. Tobby seems to agree, by the way: he has decided that the corner of the blanket closest to my feet belongs to him.
2. A Small Evening Ritual
My version is not complicated. Tea, the blanket, a lamp instead of the ceiling light, and nothing that glows except the cup. Some evenings I read. Some evenings I just sit. It sounds like nothing, and that is exactly the point. If you like soft sound in the background too, I wrote about that in I Used to Fall Asleep to My Phone.
The Evening Edit
A soft weighted blanket with even, gentle pressure, for the sofa, the bed and the long evenings in between.
Shop the Edit3. Honest Notes
A weighted blanket is warm. On summer nights it can be too much, so look for a breathable cover or plan to use it mostly in the colder months. It is also heavy to wash: many have a removable cover for exactly that reason, and I wouldn't buy one without it. And it takes a few evenings to get used to the feeling; the first night can feel strange rather than relaxing.
4. How to Choose
- The usual guideline is a blanket of roughly 10% of your body weight, rounded to the nearest size.
- Choose a blanket sized for your body, not for the whole bed: the weight should rest on you, not hang off the sides.
- Small stitched pockets keep the filling evenly spread, so it doesn't slide to one side.
- A removable, washable cover makes life much easier.
5. Questions People Ask
Is a weighted blanket safe for children? Weighted blankets are not recommended for babies and young children. For older children, choose a blanket made for their size and weight, and ask their doctor if you are unsure.
Can I sleep under it all night? Many people do. Others, like me, use it mostly on the sofa in the evening. Start with an hour and see how your body feels.
