Tobby is five and a half, and he has decided not to age.
He has never said so out loud. But I've watched him closely, and I can tell you: this dog has a skincare routine more serious than mine.
Step one: the headband. Every proper routine begins by getting the ears out of the way. Tobby prefers a soft white one with little horns. He wears it with the calm dignity of a guest at an expensive spa, and he does not appreciate laughter. I laugh anyway. Quietly. Behind the door.
Step two: the mirror check. He walks into the bathroom, stands very still, and looks up at me with those big worried eyebrows. I believe he's checking for fine lines. He finds none. He leaves satisfied.
Step three: hydration. Tobby is a firm believer in hydration from within. This is why, at the sight of any food, his mouth turns into a waterfall. Some call it drooling. He calls it a moisturizing treatment.
Step four: water therapy. Lakes, rivers, anything deep enough. He swims like a duck in a previous life, and comes out glowing. Wet, very wet, but glowing.
Step five: careful sun exposure. He loves a warm patch of sunlight on the floor. But look closely: he lets the sun have his paws, and keeps his face in the softer light. He knows.
Step six: beauty sleep. Only the fluffiest place in the house will do. Sometimes under a blue hooded blanket, hood up, face protected from the night air. Professional.
The only wrinkles Tobby allows himself are the ones on his forehead when I leave the house, even for five minutes. Those, I'm afraid, are my fault.
And I'll be honest. I would join his routine in a heartbeat if it meant he could stay exactly like this. The same soft face. The same eyes looking up at me.
Five and a half, forever.
Time doesn't work that way, I know. But if it insists on leaving its marks, I hope it leaves them slowly, and gently, on my big brown boy.
Until then, he has a headband to wear and a sunbeam to manage. Very busy schedule.
If you have a furry friend, what's their beauty secret? And if you don't, which of Tobby's steps would you steal for yourself?
With love, from HerWay (and Tobby)
