The Blanket That Changed Owners

Tobby, a chocolate Labrador, wrapped in a soft blue hooded blanket on the sofa, looking at the camera

It was my daughter's blanket first. Soft, blue, with a hood shaped like a cartoon alien with big round eyes and little white teeth. She loved it. She wrapped herself in it on cold evenings, watched films in it, fell asleep in it on the sofa more times than I can count.

Then Tobby discovered it.

It didn't happen in one day. First he lay next to it. Then on the edge of it. Then one evening I found him in the middle of the sofa, fully wrapped, with only his nose and two very serious brown eyes looking out from under the hood. The cartoon teeth sat right on his forehead, like a tiny crown.

Within a week, it was his.

My daughter tried to take it back, once or twice. Tobby didn't fight. He simply looked at her the way only a Labrador can look, as if she were taking away the last warm thing in a cold world. She gave up. "He looks better in it than I do anyway," she said. She's not wrong.

What amazes me is that he never protests the hood. Most dogs would shake it off. Tobby lets me pull it over his head, sighs, and settles in like a little boy who has just been tucked into bed. My fashion boy. My sweet, ridiculous, blue-hooded boy.

He has never once wondered whether he deserves the softest blanket in the house.

And I think about that more than I expected to. Tobby doesn't ask permission to be comfortable. He doesn't wait until everyone else is warm first. He finds the softest place, curls into it, and rests. No guilt. No apology.

For most of my life, I did the opposite. I took whatever was left. The cold coffee, the worn-out T-shirt, the corner of the sofa nobody else wanted. It took me a long time, and a lot of hard years, to understand that comfort is not something you have to earn.

Tobby knew it all along.

What is the softest thing you have allowed yourself lately? And if the answer is nothing, maybe tonight is a good night to start.
