The Birthday Cake Was an Apple

Tobby, a chocolate Labrador, smiling next to a birthday cake made of a red apple with two candles, in front of a Christmas tree

Every love story has a rival. Tobby's has cheese.

If cheese appears anywhere in the house, in a fridge being opened two rooms away, in a sandwich, in a single crumb on the floor, Tobby knows. Cheese is not a food for him. It is an event. Nothing in this world competes with cheese.

But cheese is a passion. Apples are love.

On our kitchen counter there is always a bowl of red apples. Always. Not for decoration, and, if we are honest, not only for us. Tobby knows exactly where that bowl stands. When someone walks past it, his head turns. When someone picks up an apple, his whole body becomes attention. And when the knife touches the skin, the waterfall begins. Tobby rarely drools, but for food his mouth turns into a small river, and there are never enough napkins in the house.

Cheese makes him lose his mind. Apples make him happy.

There is a difference, and anyone who has loved something quietly for years will understand it.

He doesn't eat his apple slice like a treat. He eats it like a promise kept. Crunch, crunch, gone, and then the look. You know the look. The one that says he has not eaten in weeks and you, personally, are responsible.

So when his birthday came, the question of the cake was not really a question.

We put two candles into a red apple, cut a second one in half, placed it all on a white plate under the Christmas tree and called him. I don't know what we expected. I only know what we got: the happiest face in the world, mouth open, eyes shining, as if this was the cake he had been dreaming about all year.

Maybe it was.

Some dogs get bakery cakes with frosting and paw prints. Ours got an apple with candles, and he didn't mind at all. He never wanted more. He only ever wanted what he loves, given with a little ceremony.

I think about that sometimes. How little it takes to make someone truly happy, when you know what they love.

A small note for dog owners: apple slices are a common dog treat, but the core and seeds stay with us. If you are not sure what is safe for your dog, ask your vet.

What is your dog's red apple? The one thing they love quietly, every single day?
