There is a quiet belief that rituals are for occasions and for company. That a proper pot of tea is something you make when guests come.
A tea for one set disagrees. It is made for you, alone, on an ordinary afternoon.
1. Small and Complete
The little teapot sits on top of its own cup, so the whole set takes the space of one mug. You brew, you pour, you sit down. No big pot cooling on the table, no wasted tea.
2. Setting the Table, Even Just for Yourself
Making tea properly for one person is a small act of respect. It says: I am worth a few slow minutes and a beautiful cup. Some of my steadiest moments in hard years were exactly like this, a cup held with both hands and nowhere I had to be. I wrote about that in A Cup to Hold On To.
3. Honest Notes
Hand-painted ceramic is best washed by hand to keep the colors and gold details bright, and painted metallic details are usually not microwave safe. If you drink loose leaf tea, check that the pot has a built-in strainer or add a small infuser.
4. How to Choose
- A pot that holds one or two cups.
- A strainer or infuser for loose leaf tea.
- A cup with a comfortable handle and a stable base.
- A design that makes you smile when you reach for it.
You don't need a reason or a guest to make something beautiful. You are enough of a reason.
