The Tea I Actually Finish Now

I make tea, take two sips, and then life happens. An email that can't wait. A call. The dog asking, very politely, for an apple from the bowl on the counter. By the time I come back, the tea is cold.

For years I reheated the same cup three times, or simply gave up and poured it away. It seems like such a small thing. But a cold cup of tea, every single day, is a tiny reminder that I never stay in one place long enough.

1. Warm Whenever I Come Back

A mug warmer is just a small heated plate. You set your cup on it, and it keeps the drink warm, not boiling, for as long as you leave it there. Mine sits by the window, where I like to sit when I finally sit down.

Now the tea waits for me. I can answer the email, let the dog out, fold a towel, and come back to a cup that is still warm. It sounds ridiculous to be grateful for that. I am anyway.

2. A Reason to Sit Down

Something else changed, too. Because the tea stays warm, I started coming back to it instead of drinking it standing up. A few minutes at the window, both hands around the cup. On some days, those minutes are the only quiet ones.

If you love a slow cup of tea with honey (my favorite little jar is in Honey in the Tea, Not All Over the Counter), this is the companion it was missing.

3. Honest Notes

A mug warmer keeps a drink warm; it won't reheat a cup that has already gone cold, at least not quickly. It works best with flat-bottomed ceramic or metal mugs that sit fully on the plate. Thick mugs or glass may stay a little cooler. Always choose one with an automatic shut-off, because it's very easy to forget it's on.

4. How to Choose

5. Questions People Ask

Can I use any mug? Flat-bottomed ceramic, stoneware or metal mugs work best. Paper cups and mugs with a raised base won't warm properly.

Is it safe on a wooden desk? Most warmers stay only warm to the touch underneath, but placing a coaster or tray under them is a good habit.

Some days, the smallest comforts are the ones that make you stop. A warm cup is one of them.
