As a girl, I dreamed of a bed with soft curtains around it, like a little room inside the room. A place where nothing outside could reach me.

Then life happened, and it became one of those things that seemed silly for a grown woman.

1. A Room Inside the Room

This year, I finally hung a sheer linen canopy over our bed. In the morning, the light comes through it soft and golden. At night, it feels like a quiet shelter from everything outside: the news, the work, the noise in my head.

It's just fabric. But some days, a small place that feels safe is exactly what you need.

2. Why I Stopped Calling It Silly

I spent years putting away the things I wanted because they seemed impractical or childish. Some of them were. But this one wasn't. It made our bedroom the softest room in the house, and it reminded me that the girl who dreamed of it is still here. Under the canopy, with a light throw (mine is in Soft, Light, and Always There), it's my favorite place to read.

3. Honest Notes

A canopy needs a secure ceiling hook or a four-poster frame; check how yours is mounted before you buy. Sheer fabric collects dust and should be washed now and then. Keep it well away from candles, lamps and heaters. And linen wrinkles, which I've decided is part of its charm.

4. How to Choose

5. Questions People Ask

Can I hang it without a four-poster bed? Yes. Many canopies hang from a single ceiling hook over the head of the bed.

Does it keep out insects? Some sheer canopies work as mosquito nets, but check the mesh size if that's important to you.

Some dreams don't need to be big. They just need permission.
