In my hardest period, books were one of the few things that held me. I wrote about one of them in The Book That Kept Me Swimming. But reading at night, in bed, with a heavy book and a bright lamp, wasn't always easy.

An e-reader solves the small problems that stop us reading when we need it most.

1. Easy on the Eyes at Night

An e-ink screen looks more like paper than a phone or tablet does, and the adjustable light lets you read in a dark room without waking anyone. It is light enough to hold with one hand while lying down.

2. For the Long Hours

Sleepless nights, hospital corridors, waiting rooms, long journeys: these are the hours when a book can be company. An e-reader holds thousands of them, so there is always something that fits your mood, even if your mood changes every night.

3. Honest Notes

It is a bigger gift, so it's worth knowing the person likes to read. E-books are bought separately, though many libraries lend them for free. If someone loves the feel of paper or reads mostly illustrated books, a paper book may suit them better. Even with a gentle screen, reading late can keep the mind busy, so lower the light in the evening.

4. How to Choose

Some nights, a story is the best company there is.
