Just Back from the Opera

Tobby, a chocolate Labrador, lying elegantly on the floor with his front paws crossed and his head turned in profile

Some dogs are taught good manners. Tobby was born with them.

Nobody ever showed him how to cross his paws. Nobody explained that a gentleman lies down slowly, never all at once, and that the chin should stay slightly raised, as if listening to something only he can hear. He simply knows. It came with him, the way the chocolate color came with him, and the eyebrows that move when he thinks.

Look at him on the floor in the evening. Front paws crossed, one neatly over the other. Back legs stretched out behind him with the ease of someone who has nothing to prove. Head turned in profile toward the window, calm and a little distant.

He looks as if he has just stepped out of the State Opera House for a short break, and is now resting at the little café next door, waiting for his admirers to come and talk about art.

Any minute now, someone will ask what he thought of the second act. He will consider the question carefully. He will not hurry his answer. And whatever he says, it will be kind.

Because that is the other half of being an aristocrat, the half that has nothing to do with posture. Tobby is gentle all the way through. He is big, and people sometimes cross the street when they see him coming. But he has never needed to be big. He greets the world politely, from a respectful distance, and he waits to be invited closer. He never pushes. He never insists. A true gentleman knows that the best things are offered, not taken.

I sometimes wonder where it comes from. Not from us, certainly. In our house, people collapse onto the sofa, eat standing up in the kitchen and forget to take their shoes off. Tobby watches all of this with patience, the way a well-bred guest watches his hosts, and says nothing.

Maybe some souls are simply made this way. Soft and dignified at once. Quiet, but never small.

And this is only the first layer. Under that thick chocolate frosting there are many more surprises hiding, and he reveals them slowly, one at a time, like any good performer. But those are stories for another evening.

Does your dog have a secret personality hiding under the fur? Who would they be, if they were human?

Would you like to share your answer?

I read every answer myself. It stays private unless you say otherwise.

With love, from HerWay (and Tobby)
