By evening, my eyes are often more tired than the rest of me. Screens all day, bright light, and a mind that keeps running long after the laptop is closed.
A heated eye mask brings two simple things together: darkness and gentle warmth.
1. A Small Pause
Ten or fifteen minutes with warmth over your eyes can feel like closing a door on the day. It works well on the sofa after work, before sleep, or on a long journey when you need to switch off for a while.
2. Different From a Sleep Mask
A simple sleep mask is for blocking light all night. A heated mask is more of a short ritual, used for a little while before rest. If you are looking for an all-night mask, I wrote about a silk one in For Nights When the World Needs to Go Dark.
3. Honest Notes
Choose a mask with temperature settings and an automatic shut-off, and don't fall asleep with a heated mask switched on if it has no timer. Start at the lowest temperature. If you have an eye condition, recent eye surgery or wear contact lenses, ask your doctor before using heat around your eyes.
4. How to Choose
- Several heat levels and an automatic timer.
- A soft, washable fabric cover.
- A comfortable, adjustable strap.
- USB or rechargeable power that suits where you will use it.
Rest doesn't always need hours. Sometimes it needs ten quiet minutes.
