If you want to know someone's life, look at their hands.
The hands of the person who takes care of everyone are never still. They wash and carry and cook. They sign forms at reception desks. They tie shoelaces that aren't their own, hold other people's hands in waiting rooms, smooth a blanket over someone who is sleeping. And at the end of the day they are the last thing anyone thinks to look after, including their owner.
1. Half a Minute That Belongs to You
Hand cream is such a small thing. But the moment of using it is a pause. You stop. You rub your hands together slowly, the way someone once did to warm yours when you were a child. For half a minute, your hands are not working for anyone. They are simply yours.
2. Who It Is For
The friend who always shows up. The daughter driving between work and her parents' house. The nurse, the teacher, the colleague who quietly holds half the office together. If you are thinking of someone like this, you may also like the self care gift box I wrote about.
3. Honest Notes
Scent is personal, and some people are sensitive to fragrance; when in doubt, choose light or unscented. Read the ingredients if she has allergies. Small tubes live in a handbag; bigger ones belong by the sink.
4. How to Choose
A few gentle scents rather than one strong one. And a card: "Your hands do so much. These are for them." That line will be remembered longer than the cream.
Sometimes care begins with something as small as a pause.
Whose hands would you like to thank today? You can tell me about them.
