Autumn evenings come early. One day you notice it is dark at six, and the house suddenly feels heavier.
My first painting stands on a shelf with a string of small star lights above it. Some evenings, when everything feels too much, I just switch on those lights and stand in front of it for a minute.
1. Light That Feels Kind
Fairy lights don't light a room the way a lamp does. They glow. A string along the headboard, around a mirror or over a few frames, and the space becomes softer and warmer. No harsh shadows, no office light at home.
2. Easy Ways to Use Them
Along the bed frame, in a glass jar on the windowsill, wrapped around a branch in a vase, or above a reading corner. In my own home they live above my paintings (the story is in The Paint Goes Where It Wants). For a bigger glow, I also love a sunset lamp.
The Light Edit
A string of warm white fairy lights for the headboard, a shelf or a window, with soft, golden light.

Thin copper-wire lights are delicate; if you pull or bend them too hard, a section can stop working. Battery versions are easy to place anywhere but need new batteries often, while USB or plug-in versions are better for every day. Choose warm white; cool white can feel cold and clinical.
4. How to Choose
- Warm white (around 2700K) gives the coziest glow.
- A timer or remote saves you from reaching behind furniture.
- USB or plug-in power is better for daily use than batteries.
- Check the length: 10 to 33 feet covers most headboards and windows.
5. Questions People Ask
Are they safe to leave on? LED fairy lights stay cool, but it is still wise to switch them off when you leave the house or go to sleep.
Can I use them outdoors? Only if they are marked as waterproof for outdoor use.
When the season is heavy, sometimes the answer is not to fight the dark, but to light something small inside it.
