The Morning Visitors I Never Expected to Love

I used to drink my morning coffee standing at the window, already thinking about the day. Emails, meetings, things I'd forgotten. I looked out without seeing anything.

Then I hung a small feeder outside.

1. Visitors

Now there are visitors. Quick little birds arguing over seeds, flying off and coming right back. One bold regular who always arrives first and refuses to share. They don't care about my calendar. They are completely busy, and completely unhurried, at the same time.

I sit down to watch them. Five minutes, sometimes ten. My dog watches too, nose pressed against the glass, tail moving slowly, as if he's counting them.

2. Noticing Again

I didn't expect a feeder to change my mornings. But watching something small and alive reminds me that the world is bigger than my to-do list. If you'd like that feeling with your eyes closed, my morning video with birdsong is on the Listen page.

3. Honest Notes

A feeder needs regular cleaning, about every two weeks, to keep birds healthy; dirty feeders can spread disease. Squirrels love feeders too, so a cage or baffle helps. Place it either very close to the window or well away from it, which reduces the risk of birds flying into the glass.

4. How to Choose

5. Questions People Ask

Which seed should I start with? Black oil sunflower seed is a good first choice; many small birds love it.

When will birds come? Sometimes in a day, sometimes in a couple of weeks. Keep it filled and be patient.

The morning will rush soon enough. Let it begin with something that doesn't.
